Giants Causeway

The Giants Causeway is often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world.  This remarkable arrangement of stones calls for an explanation.  The peculiar columnar foundation was caused by low and irregular cooling of lava which produced hexagonal cracks.  Although the stones are mainly six sided, there are some of 3, 5, 7 and 8 sides.  The result was produce fantastic designs that have been given names like: The Wishing Chair, My Lady's Fan, The Giants Organ, Coffin and Loom.

The Giant's Causeway is located about two miles east of Bushmills.  It is one of the main top tourist attractions in Northern Ireland.  In legend, the Giant's Causeway was the work of Finn McCool, a giant who commanded the king of Ireland's armies.  He took a fancy to a lady giant from Staffa, an island in the Hebrides, and built the Causeway to bring her to live with him in Ulster.

The world famous Giant's Causeway displays formations of unusual six sided basalt columns and a wealth of local and natural history.  There are many coast and cliff paths for exploration.

There is a Visitors Centre with interpretive displays, AV theatre and Tourist Information Centre, as well as a National Trust shop and tea rooms.

There is an admission charge to the carpark and audio visual.
