Dunluce Castle is three miles east of Portrush. It clings fast onto a dramatic cliff top. Dunluce is thought to be the most romantic and picturesque Castle in Ireland dating back to the 14th Century. It teeters on a cliff edge and was the stronghold of the MacDonnells, a Scottish clan. They had a secret entrance through a sea cave. After a Spanish Armada treasure ship was wrecked in 1588 Sorley Boy MacDonnell got money to modernise the castle. Dunluce Castle was once the residence of the Earls of Antrim, it is poised menacingly on a headland above the turbulent waves. During its troubled history this fortress suffered a terrible experience in 1639 when part of it collapsed into the sea while preparations were being made for a banquet. While nine servants drowned "The Tinker's Window" remains to tell of a tinker's lucky escape. There is an admission charge and guided tours. Telephone: 028 20 731938 |
