A Catholic Church was built in Ballygally in 1944 and dedicated to St. Joseph on Sunday, 14 May by Most Reverend Dr Mageean, the then bishop of Down and Connor. Prior to 1944 the Catholic parishioners in the Cairncastle area travelled to church in Glenarm or walked the rugged pathway over the Ballygilbert Hill to Feystown. Cairncastle Lodge, situated between Ballygally and Drains Bay, was a medium sized house with a walled garden and was built by James Agnew (1794-1880), son of Captain William Agnew in approx 1823. The Lodge was approached by two avenues on the landward side of the Coast Road and was beside the Cairndhu residence of Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon. A number of poor investments led to financial difficulties and precipitated the selling of the Lodge in 1865 to James Chaine (1841-1885). James Chaine, only lived in this area for approximately twenty years and yet has a large stone memorial built to his honour. The replica round tower known as Chaine Memorial was built in 1887 by the people of Larne in his memory. |
