Moore's Meeting House Inn (1875) PDF Print E-mail

Meeting HouseWhen a notice appeared in the Larne Weekly Reporter (September, 1875) informing readers that Robert Moore, Ballygally intended to open a licensed inn on the property of the late Robert Esler McConnell, Cairncastle, thus began the long association of the Moore family and the Meeting House Inn.

Close to the Inn, a Presbyterian Meeting House had been built in the early 18th Century and over two centuries later the names of the house of worship and the licensed inn became intermingled.  Years ago local residents used to joke that here was not just a (Presbyterian) meeting-house but a place where all could worship in the same ‘spirit’.

Over the years the inn became a firm favourite with local tipplers retaining it’s quiet, easy-going, country atmosphere in the face of competition from noisier ‘disco-pubs’.  Many a deal has been clenched in Moore’s pub over a glass of whiskey during the bi-annual Cairncastle Sheep Sales held nearby.

Robert Moore’s grand-daughter Martha was a well-known and respected proprietor for many years until her death in 1977.  Her nephew, Nat Moore and his wife Irene returned from Canada to take over the licensed premises the same year.
